A Message From Daed: Spoiler

My midterms are over! But I still have group projects and such.  Anyways, I’ll get to work on getting the chapters I owe done and released asap.
No promises because I don’t seem to be very good at keeping my translation promises :’) My excuse is that I had a good chunk of this chapter done but hahaha…I didn’t think that the phrasing of certain sentences and terms were good enough.
These chapters are great because the plot and stuff is interesting imo, but the terms and such elude me.  You would think I would know these terms with my detective drama/movie/anime/book reading experience but NOPE I GUESS NOT.
Also, that character glossary thing I mentioned doing in my Discord announcement isn’t done yet.
So you’ll have to go back and read the chapters to find out yourself.

Note: Meng La’s name has been changed to Meng Luo.  Spoiler

Truth be told, there were two different pronunciations of the character (according to MDBG dictionary) given and I went with the first option cause I was lazy.
But then as I was translating it, it seemed really off to me (because I’m used to reading the character as ‘Luo’) so…Yeah, I don’t know why I do this to myself (and others) either.

Will I ever make up my mind about certain names? Who knows…

September 1st, Nation-wide First Day of School.
On this day, Qiqi finally put on his backpack and was about to begin his primary school life.
As expected, Jiang Mo Chen wasn’t able to make it back in time.
Yan Qing Chi sent the child off to the school entrance by himself.

Yan Qing Chi helped Qiqi fix his clothes as he reminded him again, “Remember what Daddy told you?”

“I remember.” Qiqi nodded obediently.

Yan Qing Chi reminded him again, “Don’t let other people grab your clothes.
Don’t let other people kiss you.
If anyone bullies you, tell Daddy or the teacher.
If anyone wants to take off your clothes, no matter if it is a teacher or a child, you have to tell Daddy.
Even if someone wants to kiss you, that cannot happen.”

Qiqi grunted sounds of assent.

Yan Qing Chi ruffled his hair, then glanced over at the school entrance in the distance.
It was obvious that this private primary school catered to the rich and wealthy.
The teachers were all aware that the students at the school came from very affluent and high-ranking backgrounds.
So there ought not to be anyone who would dare to commit any illegal acts.

He relaxed a little.
“C’mon, Daddy will send you to the classroom.”

Yan Qing Chi watched as Qiqi found his seat and raised his hand to wave towards him.
He waved back.
Though he was rather reluctant to leave, he still turned around and left.

On the first day of school, Qiqi was very obedient.
He didn’t cry or kick up a fuss.
But when Yan Qing Chi came to pick him up in the afternoon, he leaned into the man’s embrace and hugged him.

Yan Qing Chi stroked his head and asked, “Did you have a good first day of school?”

Qiqi pondered over that question, “I did, but I also didn’t.”

“Why not?”

Qiqi lifted his head and looked up at him, “I won’t be able to see Daddy when I go to school.”

Yan Qing Chi met his gaze and sighed, “Then what should we do?”

“I still have to go to school.” Qiqi said, “On T.V., all the kids go to school.
Qiqi is also a kid, so I have to go to school.”

His words weren’t wrong.
It was a very standard syllogism.
Somehow, Yan Qing Chi had the urge to laugh when he saw a kid like him say such a standard syllogism in a helpless tone like that.

He moved Qiqi to sit on his leg and kissed the child’s face, “Qiqi is right.”

Qiqi really liked to be kissed.
He became happy again after Yan Qing Chi kissed him.
He smiled and said, “Although I won’t be able to see Daddy, I will think of Daddy.”

“I will also miss Qiqi.” Yan Qing Chi touched Qiqi’s head.

With a broad smile on his face, Qiqi burrowed into the man’s arms.
Yan Qing Chi held him and they soon played rowdily together.

Not long after sending Qiqi off to school, shooting for《Lost》began.

《Lost》was a mystery thriller; the story began with a middle-aged man’s death.

Meng Wen was the Manager of Financial Affairs at a private enterprise.
He had a amicable temperament and was good-natured.
Yet, one night, he committed suicide.
His death was just the beginning, as a chain of suicides appeared in S City.
Through the forensic diagnosis, the police ruled that the cause of death was not by suicide.
On the contrary, they were murders.
However, during the investigation, they did not find any suspects.
That all changed when He Yu—the captain of the criminal police squad and the male lead—inadvertently came across a 10-year-old news article.
Then, the cause behind the deceased’s deaths was slowly unraveled.

” ”

Ten years ago, Meng Wen was the principal of a private school.
Meng Wen and the teachers of the school utilized abusive methods to keep the students in a constant state of fear.
They did so under the banner of “helping parents rectify their problematic children”.
In doing so, the traumatized children would become obedient and lovable.
Although these children did become lovable and obedient, they lost their spirit.
They became wooden and lifeless, as well as cowardly and jittery.
There were also children who had jumped off from the building and committed suicide because they couldn’t bear the abuse.
After two successive suicides, Meng Wen was forced to stop running this private school.
He found another job and became a staff member of a private enterprise.
The other teachers found jobs as well.

These past ten years, none of them kept in touch with each other.
Nonetheless, they would convene at a specific time and place.
And when the members amongst them started to die in succession, they became even more panicked and terrified.
Nevertheless, no one dared to reach out to the police for help.
Even though they had not directly caused the two children’s suicides, they did have a hand in their deaths.
Worried that the matters of the past would be brought to light, they could only carefully and cautiously evade the murderer.
Alas, in the end, they still weren’t able to escape their deaths.

Through their investigation, the police identified the chemistry teacher Zhou Fang as their target suspect.
Ten years ago, Zhou Fang’s parents got divorced.
His younger sister followed his mother while he followed his father.
Yet when his younger sister was in her second year of middle school, she was sent off to the private school by their mother because she was dating her deskmate.
Zhou Fang’s younger sister couldn’t withstand the physical abuse.
In total despair, she committed suicide by jumping off the building.
Their mother blamed herself for this and demanded an explanation from the school.  However, after the school refused to give her an explanation, she too committed suicide.

He and his father were left behind to mourn his younger sister and mother.
At that time, he was merely 18 years old.
He was still a student who had just started university, with no means to take revenge.
Zhou Fang etched their faces into his memory.
Ten years later, he returned once more to this city.

Through the witness statements, investigation reports, and collected evidence, the police determined and held the chemistry teacher Zhou Fang responsible for the crimes.
However, just as he was writing up the case summary, He Yu suddenly realized that there was one person whose death was impossible for Zhou Fang to pull off.
He reviewed every detail extensively, completely reorganizing his thought process as he flipped through his notes.
Finally, he realized that from the beginning to the end, he had overlooked someone:  Meng Wen’s son——Meng Luo.

Meng Luo was Meng Wen’s son.
He was 20 years old and in his third year of university.
He had a taciturn nature and a refined demeanor.
Meng Wen raised him up singlehandedly.
Meng Luo didn’t make that many appearances, only quietly cooperating during the police investigation.
He seemed to be very miserable because of his father’s death; however, due to his introverted personality, he was unable to exhibit his feelings too openly.

He was always very cooperative every time he was questioned.
Whether it was regarding Meng Wen’s usual daily routines, interpersonal relationships, or even about the private school Meng Wen had managed ten years ago, Meng Luo always cooperated with a sincere attitude.
However, it was precisely because of this (very cooperative attitude) that every move that the police made had actually more or less been influenced by him.
Hence, they became pawns in his scheme.

He Yu went to confront Meng Luo, to talk to him one-on-one and apprehend him.
Meng Luo sat on the couch in the house.
He was  quiet as usual, but there was also something a little different from before.
He was so full of youthful energy, so confident, just like a daffodil admiring itself beside the lake.

He said, “That’s right, it was me.
I was the one who killed them.”

He looked at He Yu with a mixture of condescendence and arrogance.
His normal mask had been cast away, and he willfully shone with the splendor of his young life.

At the end of the story, He Yu arrested Meng Luo.

But what was ‘mitu’ (losing one’s way)?3 He Yu going down the wrong path during the case was mitu; Meng Luo and Zhou Fang’s selfish vengeance using illegal means was mitu; Meng Wen and the others’ abusive treatment towards the students was mitu; the parents sending their kids off to Meng Wen’s school was also mitu.
Every person who appeared in the film had their respective mitu.

In this script, it was undeniable that, as the male protagonist, He Yu had the most scenes and the most righteous personality.
He was earnest, upright, and responsible.
He possessed outstanding intelligence and physical strength; he was the best character persona in the movie.

As the second male lead, Zhou Fang—as the one who He Yu had always suspected to be the perpetrator— fought in a battle of wits with He Yu.
He was clever and cunning, but he didn’t lose his gentleness towards his family.
His character persona was also full of highlights.

Due to the limitations of the plot, the female lead Sun Juan didn’t have as many scenes as Zhou Fang.
But, she was gentle and attentive, resolute and daring, capable and experienced.
At the same time, she always supported He Yu’s decisions.
Her character could be said to be the brightest smear of color in this movie.

As for Meng Luo, he didn’t have many scenes in the movie.
He only appeared in the beginning when he was being interrogated by the police.
Yet, it was precisely because he didn’t draw anyone’s attention in the beginning that the spectacularism of the plot twist was heightened.
This caused the climactic scenes at the end to be like the popped cap of a soda bottle.
With a  “pop!”, it caused others to exclaim in admiration.

Yan Qing Chi was very satisfied with his role.
Although he didn’t have that many scenes, he had plenty of room to work with.
If he portrayed the character well, he reckoned that he could make his existence known.

He followed the production crew and participated in the launch ceremony.
He prayed and inserted the incense stick into the incense holder.
Then, he officially began his first movie.

Footnotes

The original Chinese was “棋棋笑着往他怀里钻,燕清池抱着他,很快,和他闹成了一团”.
I don’t know how to describe the picture that comes to my mind.
Lynn thought my original translation of it had pedo connotations…他看着贺宇,轻蔑而骄傲,卸下了平日的伪装,肆意的迸发着他年轻生命的光彩。This is the Chinese title of the movie that they are filming (《迷途》) which I translated it as 《Lost》.
迷途 (mitu) means “to lose one’s way”.
