Cooling Off Period?

———————————

I said something a little rude in response to a sales pitch.
I’m in trouble now.

“Oh, really? Are you telling me to ask politely? Isn’t this just a newbie adventurer getting too cocky?” The guild master is getting heated up too.
Isn’t this situation bad enough already? I’m being treated as a scammer, and now I’ve picked a fight with the guild master? I haven’t even started my adventure yet, and I feel like my career as an adventurer is already over.
Maybe I should bow down and apologize.

“Getting too cocky? I just taught a clueless fool like you the proper way to ask for something.
It’s good that you learned something.” No, that’s not it.
That’s not why I said those things.
I didn’t mean to start a fight.
It’s just that I can’t control my mouth.
Sylphy, you don’t need to warm up.
Let’s try to resolve this peacefully somehow.
Bell, don’t play on the guild master’s head just because he hasn’t noticed you.

“You really don’t care about your life, do you?”

I do care.
Life is a very important thing.
I didn’t plan on my life in this other world turning violent.

The guild master’s veins are bulging on his forehead so much that it looks like they might burst.
Can we resolve this peacefully? I just want to get out of this place.
Is there some kind of event we can start where monsters overflow from the dungeon?

“Your threats are weak.
All you say is that you want to kill me.
Is that all you got? Do you want to be able to deny it later when you secretly dispose of me? Are you a cowardly and sneaky person… ha! There’s no hope for you.”

I want to settle this peacefully, but looking at the guild master’s face makes me so angry that I can’t control myself.
Is it because our first meeting was terrible? If things continue like this, it’s going to turn into a serious fight.
Let’s just run away.

“Do you have anything else to say besides your threats? It’s a waste of time.
Can I just leave now?” I tell the guild master, who’s struggling to speak because of his anger.
Please nod your head here.
I won’t come to see you ever again, guild master.
Let’s avoid getting involved with each other.

“Don’t mess with me.”

Oh, wow.
That’s a voice squeezed from the gut.
I would have let it slip if Sylphy wasn’t here.
Why won’t you nod your head? We need a cooling-off period here.
Let’s both take a step back and calm down.
Even though I’m the one who’s been provoking things.

“Gu-Guild Master.
It seems like continuing this conversation might lead to problems.
It’s probably necessary to take some time to calm down,” said Eltina.

“Oh, thank you very much, Eltina.
That’s very helpful.
Guild Master, let’s just end things here without adding any more mean words.
Let’s both say our goodbyes calmly,” I said, trying to defuse the situation.

“Yes, I agree.
It doesn’t seem like we can have a calm discussion, so you can leave now,” said the Guild Master, looking at the door.
He didn’t say anything else.

When I left the room and Eltina followed me out, I heard a loud noise coming from the Guild Master’s room.
He was still agitated.

“Um, Eltina, could I ask you to exchange my magic stones for money?” I asked her.

Eltina looked at me with a troubled expression.
She was basically saying, “Just leave already.” I understood, but I needed the money for shopping, and I didn’t know when I wouldn’t be able to stay in the Labyrinth City anymore.

“I know I should leave quickly, but I really need the money, so please,” I said, laughing nervously.

“Eugh, alright.
Here…” Eltina sighed heavily.
I was causing her a lot of trouble, and I felt bad about it.
I’m sorry.
She led me to a back room, which was apparently used for discreet transactions.
It was safer to do it here than at the counter, where things could get messy.

“Alright, please give me the magic stones,” she said, urging me to place them on the tray.
I took out the magic stones from my magic bag and placed them on the tray.
They kept clinking as more and more of them came out.
I had no idea I had this many.

“Eltina, I don’t think they will all fit.
There’s still about half left…”

Eltina’s mouth twitches, “Then, please put the rest over here.
But where did you gather so many magic stones?”

“In the Land of Death.
I didn’t collect many zombie magic stones because they were too creepy, so there are hardly any of those.
Plus, I made sure to clean them properly, so they’re all clean,” I reply.

Eltina prepares another tray and I manage to fit the remaining magic stones on it, just barely.
I wonder how many there are? If I had collected the zombie magic stones, I might have had twice as many.
I might have missed out on some valuable items.

“The Land of Death? Why would you go to a place like that?” Eltina asks, looking very surprised.

“Well, it was for training,” I answer, not knowing how else to explain it.

“I-I see.
Well, let me confirm them,” she says, as she checks each magic stone and arranges them into different trays.
“This one is E-rank, this one is D-rank, and this one…” she mumbles as she checks each one.

I remember Sylphy telling me that Skeletons are E-rank, Soldiers are D-rank, Knights and Mages are C-rank, Generals are B-rank, and Liches are A-rank.
I’m excited to see how much they’re worth.

Well, apparently, A-rank magic stones are valuable to some extent, but materials are in higher demand and are more expensive.
So, I shouldn’t expect too much money from them.

By the way, I heard that Skeletons and Zombies don’t have any useful materials.
It’s a tough world we live in when even the materials in the Land of Death are dead.
In a sense, it’s consistent and impressive.

But I was surprised when I realized I was fighting against an A-rank monster without even realizing it.
Normally, there should have been more of a reaction to it.
When I asked Sylphy about it, she said that since I won, there was no problem.
But I wasn’t entirely convinced.

“This one… Yuuta, this magic stone is B-rank, isn’t it?”

“Hmm, I can’t tell the difference between magic stones, so I don’t know.
But if it’s a B-rank magic stone, there should be three of them,” I reply.

“You’re a first-time adventurer with the guild, aren’t you? And it seems like you don’t know much about spirit mages.
What kind of life were you living before this? Your clothes are different too,” she asks, sounding suspicious.

Am I being doubted? Well, I do realize that I look quite suspicious.

“I’m just a simple country boy who’s new to the guild.
My clothes are different because I come from a faraway place,” I explain.

I wonder how far Earth is from here.
It must be very far away.

“Are you hiding something?”

“I have a lot of secrets, but I haven’t done anything wrong, so please don’t worry,” I reply.

But she doesn’t seem to be reassured at all.
Her gaze is that of someone looking at a suspicious person.

“Yuuta, do you really think we can trust you? Just the fact that a first-time adventurer like you has three B-rank magic stones is suspicious,” she says bluntly.

I’ve been called out for being suspicious.

“Well, even if I say I’m not suspicious, how can I prove it? By the way, there are even A-rank magic stones in that pile of magic stones.
They’re Lich magic stones.
Does that make me more suspicious?”

There’s no point in trying to make excuses, so I try to be more straightforward.

“…How did you get them?”

“Hahaha, I defeated them and got them, of course,” I reply.

The suspicious looks are getting stronger.
It seems like my good relationship with the guild receptionist was just an illusion.
Can I still redeem myself from here?

“I’ll report it to the guild master.”

“Is it possible for me to rank up?”

“If you receive a request and prove your abilities, there is a possibility of ranking up.
However, permission from the guild master is necessary for anything other than regular rank ups.”

Eltina looked at me seeking confirmation, and I returned her gaze with a nod.
It seems like it’s impossible to jump up to a high rank in one go.
The guild master’s judgment will likely be necessary for anything outside of the regular rank up process, and it’s unlikely that he would approve of anything too sudden.
It’s a bit disheartening.

“Eltina, I’m planning to start taking requests at the guild from now on, but is there a chance that the guild master will refuse to accept them since I’ve angered him?”

“So, you plan on staying in the labyrinth city.
As long as the guild master does not punish you, we will not refuse to accept requests from you.
However, I don’t think anyone will want to party up with you, given the circumstances, so it might be difficult for you.”

She’s giving me a look that says “I’m not saying anything bad, but maybe try somewhere else.”

“Is it because I’m a spirit mage?”

“That’s one of the major reasons, but also because we cannot ignore any conflicts with the guild master within the guild.
So, it’s better to avoid them altogether.”

I see.
My reputation must have taken a hit.
It’s understandable that no one would want to associate with someone who has picked a fight with the guild master.
I guess I’ll be soloing from now on.
That’s fine.
I have Sylphy and the others with me, so I won’t be lonely.

“Well, I’m fine with soloing, so if I can still take requests, then it’s not a problem.
Can you also recommend some shops where I can use the magic stones as payment?”

“What do you need?”

It seems like Eltina has given up on trying to convince me otherwise.
However, if I follow her advice and leave the labyrinth city, the guild master will be pleased.
That’s not something I will allow to happen.

“I need clothes, armor, furniture, cooking tools, ingredients, seasonings, and books.
Can you help me with that?” I asked.

“I understand.
I’ll give you a map when we exchange the magic stones,” Eltina replied.

After that, the conversation ended, and I just stared at Eltina’s expressionless face.
She only showed a slight reaction when an A-rank magic stone appeared.

“Please wait a moment,” she said before leaving the room.

“Hey, Yuta.
If you had left everything to me, you wouldn’t have been treated like that.
Do you want me to take care of it now?” Sylphy asked.

“Take care of it?” “Kyukyuu!” “Don!” “Kuuuu!” The spirits chimed in.

Sylphy seemed to be enjoying herself.
I wonder if Bell and the others know what’s going on.
Turu’s “don” is a little scary.
But if I left it to them, the surrounding area might turn into a hellish battlefield, so I’ll stop them for now.

“It’s okay like this.
It’ll be funny to see the guild master’s reaction when the person he looked down on makes a big impact.
If everyone is together, it’ll definitely be a success, right? I was planning on taking it slow and enjoying exploring the labyrinth, but I’ll put more effort into it now.
Sylphy, please help me out,” I said.

“…Yuta, you have a bad personality,” Slyphy remarked.

Yeah, I might be petty like trying to get back at the guild master, but he is the one being petty here.

“I do have a bad personality, don’t I? Hey, Sylphy.
If my personality is too bad, will the spirits abandon me?” I asked.

“It depends on the situation.
As long as you don’t upset the balance of nature or do anything evil, it’s fine.
Also, it depends on how you communicate with the spirits.
Even the spirits have emotions, so retaliation for something like this is not a problem.
Besides, that man insulted not just the spirit mage, but the spirits themselves.
Heh, Yuta.
You are my contractor, you know that, right?” Sylphy replied.

What does she mean? I can tell by looking at her eyes what she wants to say.
Sylphy seems a little irritated too.
Maybe she has a lower boiling point than me.

I always thought that spirits were pure and loved nature, but maybe they’re more worldly than I thought.
Dyne is pretty loyal to her desires, too.
Well, that guild master will be in for a surprise, that’s for sure.
